Reclaiming Recovery Project

As LGBTIQ+ domestic abuse service providers, we're interested in what recovery means to those accessing our services and what they would like our support to look like. The Reclaiming Recovery Project explores how well our new recovery programme reflects the needs of our community, working to centre and develop services from a survivor perspective of recovery.

We led an 18-month research project, in partnership with Stonewall Housing and the Outside Project, exploring how LGBTIQ+ survivors experience recovery and support within a specialist LGBTIQ+ domestic abuse service.

The project presents an analysis of the pilot STAR Recovery Programme, which was trialed at STAR’s weekly drop in, STAR Lounge, in autumn 2024, before running formally at STAR Refuge in Winter 2025. As part of this project, we also spoke to professionals supporting LGBTIQ+ survivors in other specialist organisations.

The project offers useful insights and information for developing or refining existing recovery programmes. They are relevant to services and organisations working with LGBTIQ+ survivors of DA, as well as to those providing in-person and group-based recovery support to other and broader groups.
